Tawheed, the concept of the Oneness of Allah, is the most fundamental and essential belief in Islam. The word “Tawheed” comes from the Arabic root “wahhada,” which means to unify or to make one. In Islamic theology, Tawheed means to believe that Allah is One, unique, and without any partner in His Lordship, worship, and names and attributes.
The Qur’an repeatedly emphasizes that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah. This testimony of faith is the first pillar of Islam and the gateway to becoming a Muslim.
This means believing that Allah alone is the Creator, Sustainer, and Controller of the universe. He gives life and death, provides sustenance, and has complete authority over everything. Nothing happens without His will and knowledge. Recognizing Allah as the sole Lord strengthens a believer’s trust in Him and removes fear of other powers.
Tawheed al-Uluhiyyah calls for sincerity in worship and complete devotion to Allah alone.
This means believing in all the names and attributes of Allah as mentioned in the Qur’an and authentic Hadith, without altering, denying, or comparing them to His creation. These names reflect His perfection and uniqueness. Muslims believe that there is nothing like Him, and He is beyond human imagination.
The importance of Tawheed cannot be overstated. It shapes a Muslim’s worldview, character, and actions. This belief creates humility, gratitude, patience, and reliance on Him. It frees a person from superstition, fear of creation, and dependence on worldly status or material wealth.
This belief strengthens unity within the Muslim community and encourages justice and compassion.
The struggle between monotheism and polytheism has been a recurring theme in human history. Islam revived and completed the pure message of monotheism through Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Tawheed By affirming the Oneness of Allah in belief, worship, and actions, a Muslim builds a strong spiritual foundation and achieves true peace and purpose in life.
