Basic Islamic Beliefs: Understanding the Foundation of Islam

Islam is one of the world’s major religions, followed by over a billion people worldwide.  These beliefs shape the spiritual, moral, and social life of Muslims.

1. Belief in One God (Tawheed)

The most fundamental belief in Islam is Tawheed, the belief in the absolute oneness of Allah. Muslims believe that Allah is the Creator, Sustainer, and Ruler of the universe. He has no partners, no children, and no equals. Allah is all-powerful, all-knowing, and most merciful.

The central religious text of Islam, the Qur’an, repeatedly emphasizes the oneness of God. Muslims worship Allah alone and seek help only from Him. This belief teaches Muslims humility, trust in God, and a direct relationship with their Creator without intermediaries.

2. Belief in Angels

Muslims believe in angels as spiritual beings created by Allah from light. Angels do not have free will; they always obey Allah’s commands.

One of the most well-known angels is Jibreel (Gabriel), who delivered the message of the Qur’an to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Belief in angels reminds Muslims that their actions are recorded and that the unseen world exists beyond human perception.

3. Belief in the Holy Books

Islam teaches that Allah sent divine books to guide humanity. It provides guidance on faith, morality, law, and daily life. Muslims recite it in prayers and turn to it for spiritual and practical direction.

4. Belief in the Prophets

Muslims believe that Allah sent prophets to every nation to guide people toward truth and righteousness. These prophets were human beings chosen by Allah to convey His message. They included Adam, Nuh (Noah), Ibrahim (Abraham), Musa (Moses), Isa (Jesus), and many others (peace be upon them all).

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is believed to be the final prophet, known as the “Seal of the Prophets.” Muslims respect and honor all prophets without discrimination. Their lives serve as examples of patience, faith, and obedience to God.

5. Belief in the Day of Judgment

A central belief in Islam is life after deathThis belief encourages moral responsibility and ethical behavior. It reminds Muslims that their actions have consequences beyond this worldly life.

6. Belief in Divine Decree (Qadr)

Muslims believe in Qadr, the divine decree of Allah. This means that Allah has knowledge of all things, past, present, and future. Nothing happens without His permission.

Conclusion

The basic Islamic beliefs form a complete system of faith that guides every aspect of a Muslim’s life. Faith in one God, angels, holy books, prophets, the Day of Judgment, and divine decree together create a strong spiritual foundation. These beliefs promote honesty, justice, compassion, and accountability.

By understanding and practicing these core beliefs, Muslims strive to live a life that pleases Allah and contributes positively to society.
